Organic Heirloom Brown Collection

Dye-free

This collection is made with 100% dye-free organic cotton. Cotton naturally grows in a variety of colors like brown, green and red. These cotton varieties have been grown around the world for thousands of years. In the 20th century, the fashion industry preferred white cotton varieties because it was easier to dye the cotton textiles precise and uniform colors.

At Harvest & Mill, we think differently. We believe the natural colors of cotton are not only beautiful, but have the potential to detoxify and decarbonize the fashion industry. We have been designing with heirloom cotton since 2016 and continue to champion the scientists, organic farmers, heritage mills and our local sewing community – all located in the USA - who help make this collection possible.

Detoxify the fashion industry

Fast fashion is toxic. During the dyeing stage, fast fashion brands can use harmful substances like azo dyes that have been shown to be carcinogenic and do not easily biodegrade. This collection explores one alternative to that destructive and toxic status quo – to opt out of dyes all together. We don’t actually need to dye clothing. We can simply embrace the colors that nature creates and in the process, we can
keep our bodies and our communities free of toxic dyes.

Natural is beautiful

There is no need to add dyes to organic heirloom cotton. Like many colors that exist in the natural world, it looks more alive and multi-dimensional. The cotton’s warm brown hue catches light and radiates like a leaf or a flower. The color isn’t flat like chemical-created textiles. When it comes to designing colors, sometimes nature just does it best.

Decarbonize the fashion industry

The dyeing process uses large amounts of energy and water. By eliminating that step, we are significantly lowering the impact of our clothing. The brown cotton used to make these garments are 100% organic and are grown, milled and sewn in the USA. Our fully USA domestic supply chain means that raw materials travel a fraction of the distance of nearly all other clothing brands, decreasing the carbon footprint of each piece of clothing.

Climate resilient

Cotton is a plant-based fiber from the genus Gossypium. Different varieties of cotton have their own characteristics such as fiber length and fiber color. Some varieties grow better in valleys with fertile soil while other varieties grow better on drier land. As climate change alters our ecosystems, we increasingly need more varieties of plants that can adapt to changing conditions.
