Organic Cotton
Our Promise
Harvest & Mill only uses organic cotton that is grown in the USA. Organic cotton keeps significant amounts of toxic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and soil chemicals out our of natural resources. By supporting American organic cotton farmers, we are helping to keep our soil, water and air clean while making sure we aren’t polluting the environment of developing nations.
The Numbers
• In 2014, 91% of American grown cotton was GMO.
• Eight of the top ten pesticides most commonly used on conventionally grown U.S. cotton were classified as moderately to highly hazardous by the World Health Organization.
• Just 2.4% of the world's arable land is planted with cotton yet conventional cotton accounts for 24% of the world's insecticide market and 11% of the sale of global pesticides, making it the most pesticide-intensive crop grown on the planet.
Cotton Farming
Cotton fiber is extremely absorbent. When agro-chemicals are sprayed on cotton plants, the cotton fibers absorb and retain those compounds.
Agro-chemicals leach into the water and soil, contaminating our drinking water and ecosystems. Agriculture is the largest polluter of water in the world and these toxic compounds cannot be completely filtered out.
Farmworkers and farmlands have concentrated exposure to these chemicals.
